Staff Spotlight – Dan Tomkins

July 2024

We recently caught up with Team Leader, Dan Tomkins on his time at Mtec

How long have you been with Mtec and what has your journey been like?

I have been at Mtec for over eight years. In that time I have seen a lot of change, it’s been great to be a part of the growth and expansion of the company. I started out working in our Royston warehouse, from there I was offered the opportunity to progress to become an art technician. After some time I was selected for a major project in China, which was a great experience and took place over a three-week period. During my time on this project and many others I was able to prove I had what it took to become a Team Leader and shortly after I got promoted to one.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

There is a lot of variety in the work, which makes it really interesting. There are always challenges to overcome which continually help to build my character and experience. The Mtec team is great and made of many different personalities, backgrounds and skillsets. I get to run internal training on hanging artworks, creating shadow boxes and wrapping works, I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and being part of what makes Mtec so unique.

What has been your most exciting project to be involved in?

The project in China has been one of the most exciting. I got to work with some of the most advanced technicians and project managers in the industry, which meant I learnt a lot on this job. I also enjoyed discovering a new culture and seeing a different part of the world.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Our projects can be unpredictable at times because of location, weather and various other factors. In the moments that a challenge arises we come together to find the best outcome and get the job done. This means that we utilise each other’s knowledge, experience and expertise, which we are fortunate to have a lot of in the team.

Do you have a favourite artist?

Kaws. I have a few pieces in my house, and I like how vibrant his work is.
